SECTION 5: ALASKA TRUEFILING — E-FILING SYSTEM
TrueFiling is the electronic filing and service platform for Alaska state courts:
☐ All parties' counsel are registered TrueFiling users — service was completed automatically upon e-filing
☐ Some parties are not registered TrueFiling users — manual service was used for those parties (described above)
☐ The party is self-represented (pro se) and not registered in TrueFiling — alternate service was used
TrueFiling Filing Confirmation:
- TrueFiling Envelope/Transaction No.: [________________________________]
- Date/Time of Submission: [__/__/____] at [____:____] [AM/PM] AKT
- Accepted by Court: ☐ Yes ☐ Pending ☐ No (describe: [________________])
When a document is filed through TrueFiling and all opposing parties are registered TrueFiling users, the system automatically generates and sends service notices to all registered parties. No separate manual service is required for registered users.

Date of Service: [__/__/____]
Time of Service / Transmission: [____:____] [AM/PM] Alaska Time (AKT / AKST / AKDT)
Location / City of Mailing or Delivery: [________________________________], Alaska
Note: Under Alaska R. Civ. P. 5.3(b)(4), electronic service through TrueFiling is complete upon transmission. Under Alaska R. Civ. P. 6(c), when a response period begins upon service by mail, three (3) additional days are added to the prescribed period. This 3-day mail rule does not apply to TrueFiling or email service.
SECTION 9: MAIL RULE — TIME COMPUTATION (ALASKA R. CIV. P. 6(c))
Alaska 3-Day Mail Rule:
When any party is required to act within a prescribed period after service by mail, Alaska Rule 6(c) adds 3 calendar days to that period.
| Served By | Additional Days | Total Time to Respond |
|---|---|---|
| TrueFiling (e-service) | 0 additional days | As prescribed by rule |
| Email (with consent) | 0 additional days | As prescribed by rule |
| First-Class U.S. Mail | +3 calendar days | Original period + 3 days |
| Certified Mail | +3 calendar days | Original period + 3 days |
| Hand delivery | 0 additional days | As prescribed by rule |
Example: If a motion requires a 10-day response and service was by mail, the response is due within 13 days of the date the envelope was deposited in the mail.

SECTION 11: E-FILING INSTRUCTIONS (TRUEFILING)
How TrueFiling Service Works:
- Attorney logs into TrueFiling at truefiling.com or through the Alaska Courts portal.
- Attorney uploads the document and submits the filing envelope.
- TrueFiling transmits the filing to the court for acceptance.
- TrueFiling simultaneously sends electronic service notices to all registered parties' email addresses on file.
- Upon court acceptance, TrueFiling sends a confirmation email with a transaction number.
- The filing is deemed served on registered parties at the time of transmission.
- For non-registered parties, the filer must serve by alternate means and file a separate certificate of service.
Important: Retain TrueFiling confirmation emails and service notices in the litigation file.
SECTION 12: PRACTITIONER NOTES
TrueFiling Auto-Service:
When all parties are registered in TrueFiling, service is automatic upon electronic filing. A separate certificate of service is still required in most cases to document the method and date of service. Check the court's local administrative orders regarding whether TrueFiling confirmation alone satisfies the certificate of service requirement.
3-Day Mail Rule:
Alaska R. Civ. P. 6(c) adds 3 days when service is made by mail. This applies to any deadline triggered by service — motions, responses, objections, etc. The mail rule does NOT apply when service is made electronically (TrueFiling or email).
Pro Se Parties:
Alaska courts have many self-represented litigants, particularly in family law and small civil matters. If a party is pro se and not registered in TrueFiling and has not provided an email address to the court, they must be served by mail or hand delivery. Confirm the party's address on file with the court.
Privacy — Alaska Admin. R. 37.5:
When filing certificates of service, do not include home addresses of private individuals unless required. Use counsel's office address whenever possible. Redact social security numbers, financial account numbers, and minor children's names per Admin. R. 37.5.
Alaska Judicial Districts:
- First Judicial District: Southeast Alaska (Juneau)
- Second Judicial District: Northwest Alaska (Nome)
- Third Judicial District: Southcentral Alaska (Anchorage)
- Fourth Judicial District: Interior Alaska (Fairbanks)
The court location (e.g., "Anchorage," "Fairbanks") is part of the case caption.
Difference Between Certificate of Service and Proof of Service:
A Certificate of Service is an attorney's certification (unsworn statement) that service was made. A Proof of Service (Affidavit of Service) is a sworn statement, typically used for service of process (summons and complaint). For routine service of pleadings and motion papers under Alaska R. Civ. P. 5, a Certificate of Service (unsworn) is generally sufficient.
This template was prepared for use in Alaska state court practice. It is not a substitute for independent legal research and attorney judgment. Verify all citations and procedures against current Alaska Rules of Civil Procedure and TrueFiling requirements.
About This Template
These are the filings that drive a lawsuit through the system: complaints, answers, motions, briefs, discovery requests and responses, and post-judgment papers. Each has its own format requirements under federal and state procedural rules, and each has a deadline that cannot be missed without consequences. Clean, procedurally correct filings move a case forward; sloppy ones invite motions to strike, amended responses, and avoidable delays.
