This worksheet does not replace the certificate of title, the official MVD-10009, or another form required by MVD.

B. TITLE AND BILL-OF-SALE DOCUMENTS

☐ Review the current outstanding certificate of title. MVD identifies the title as the primary ownership-transfer document for a used vehicle.

☐ Complete the assignment on the title exactly as directed.

☐ Use the current official MVD-10009 when the required title assignment information is incomplete, there is no remaining assignment space, or MVD otherwise directs its use.

☐ Do not alter or erase the official MVD-10009; the form states that alterations or erasures void it.

☐ If the title is from another state, or the asset has never been titled, confirm the current visual VIN or HIN inspection procedure with MVD.

☐ Do not resell the vehicle or vessel before the buyer completes the required title process; the MVD-10009 instructions state that the buyer must title it before selling it again.

D. PLATE-TO-OWNER STEP

For a New Mexico vehicle plate:

The MVD-10009 instructions warn of a transfer penalty after 30 days and an additional excise-tax penalty if the vehicle or vessel is not titled within 90 days. Use the transaction date above and confirm the current amount and application with MVD.

F. GIFT TRANSFER

☐ This is a claimed gift. The parties will use current official MVD-10018 rather than the sale-price provisions of this template.

The November 2025 MVD-10018 requires separate donor and recipient affidavits, both signatures, and separate notarization blocks. It also includes the applicable odometer section.

G. VESSEL-SPECIFIC ROUTING

☐ Confirm whether the asset is a titled “boat,” a registration-only motorboat, or another vessel category under current MVD guidance.

MVD's current Boats & ATVs page states that a motorboat under 10 feet must be registered but is not required to be titled, while voluntary titling may be available. Do not infer the rule for a different vessel from that statement.

☐ Confirm the current title, registration, numbering, inspection, lien, tax, and document requirements directly with MVD.
