MAINE-SPECIFIC NOTES

Equitable Distribution: Maine divides marital property in just proportions. There is no presumption of equal division (19-A M.R.S. § 953).

Multiple Support Types: Maine provides five categories of spousal support under § 951-A: general, transitional (max 2 years), reimbursement, nominal, and interim.

Preliminary Injunction: Upon filing, the court issues an automatic preliminary injunction prohibiting disposal of property and other actions (19-A M.R.S. § 903).

60-Day Waiting Period: A final hearing cannot occur until at least 60 days after the complaint is served.

Residency Requirement: At least one party must have been a resident of Maine for at least six months before filing, or the parties must have been married in Maine and at least one resides there at filing (19-A M.R.S. § 901).

Mediation: The court may require mediation for contested issues (19-A M.R.S. § 952-A).

No-Fault Only: Maine has abolished fault-based grounds. The sole ground is irreconcilable marital differences (§ 902(1)(B)).
