Kansas Courts E-Filing (eFlex System)

1. Mandatory E-Filing: All Kansas-licensed attorneys must file electronically in all case types in all state courts through the eFlex system
2. Filing Portal: Access the Kansas Courts eFiling portal at https://filer.kscourts.org/
3. Registration: Attorneys must register for an eFlex account using their Kansas Bar number
4. Payment: Filing fees are payable through the e-filing system via credit card or electronic check

PRACTITIONER NOTES

Kansas-Specific Practice Considerations

1. Case Number Format: Kansas district courts assign case numbers in the format: [Year]-CV-[Number] (e.g., 2026-CV-001234). The Clerk assigns the case number upon filing.

2. Service Deadlines: Under K.S.A. 60-203(a), service must be obtained within 90 days after the petition is filed, or the action will be dismissed without prejudice as to that defendant.

3. Responsive Pleading Deadline: The defendant has 21 days after service to file an answer or responsive motion (K.S.A. 60-212(a)).

4. Venue Transfer: If venue is improper, the court shall transfer the action to any district or county where it could have been brought (K.S.A. 60-610).

5. Mandatory Pretrial Conference: Many Kansas judicial districts require a pretrial conference under K.S.A. 60-216. Check local rules for scheduling requirements.

6. Limitations Periods (Common):

7. Medical Malpractice Screening Panel: Kansas requires submission to a medical malpractice screening panel before filing suit (K.S.A. 65-4901 et seq.).

8. Comparative Fault: Kansas follows modified comparative fault -- plaintiff barred if 50% or more at fault (K.S.A. 60-258a).

9. Local Rules: Each judicial district may have supplemental local rules regarding scheduling, discovery, and motion practice. Always consult the local rules for the district where you file.
