COUNSEL COMPLETION CHECKLIST

☐ The signer is not a special administrator and, if a successor, the predecessor
did not already discharge the inventory duty.

☐ The later of six months after appointment and nine months after death was
calculated and calendared.

☐ Counsel determined that every scheduled item was owned by the decedent at death.

☐ Every item has reasonable detail, date-of-death fair market value, and the type
and amount of any encumbrance.

☐ Every appraised item identifies the qualified and disinterested appraiser's
name and address with that item.

☐ Exactly one original-inventory route was selected and completed.

☐ Any supplementary inventory states the correction and supporting data and
follows the disposition route required by N.D.C.C. § 30.1-18-08.

☐ The court caption and case number match the appointment papers if the inventory
will be filed. N.D.C.C. § 30.1-02-02 gives the district court jurisdiction over
decedents' estates.

Estate planning documents decide what happens to your property, your children, and your medical care when you cannot make those decisions yourself. Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives each serve different purposes and each have to meet state law requirements for signing, witnessing, and notarization. A document that looks fine on the page but was not executed correctly can be rejected in probate, which is exactly when it is too late to fix.
