Requirements one by one
Reports by role
The person guardian's report is due only if the court directs one, at the intervals the court specifies (§ 11a-17(b)). It describes the adult's condition, each residence and length of stay, services, the guardian's visits and activities, and whether guardianship should continue.
The estate guardian's opening inventory is due within 60 days after letters issue (§ 14-1(a)). It is verified and covers known property and claims; later-discovered property triggers a supplemental inventory within 60 days. A verified estate account is then due within 30 days after the first year ends, unless the court allows more time (§ 24-11(a)).
Later accounts and notice
The estate guardian accounts again when the court requires. If the court sets no time, § 24-11(a) supplies a fallback: within 30 days after three years from the preceding account. The account lists receipts, disbursements and personal estate on hand; the court may require proof of disbursements and possession.
For a final-account hearing, notice goes to the adult if living and to others the court directs (§ 24-11(b)). An estate funded in whole or part by specified Veterans Administration benefits has an additional regional-office notice and account-copy requirement at least 10 days before any account hearing.
What trips people up
The inventory, first account and later accounts use different triggers. If the guardian's office ends, § 24-11(a) calls for an account within 30 days, subject to a court extension. Failure to file an inventory or account after a court order is a possible removal ground (§ 23-2(a)(7)); the court may also act on a person guardian's report (§ 11a-17(b)).
The current § 11a-17(b) names the Office of the State Guardian as a source of requested reporting assistance. Its published future text names the Division of State Guardian instead; P.A. 104-465's effective-date clause makes that Article 10 change effective July 1, 2027. The report's court-directed timing and content remain the same in the published versions. The § 23-2 page also shows a separate removal ground for a private professional guardian, effective January 1, 2027; the ordered-filing ground in subsection (a)(7) remains in both versions.
Common questions
Does the person guardian automatically file an annual report? Section 11a-17(b) ties that report and its interval to a court direction. Check the appointment and later orders.
What belongs in an estate inventory? Section 14-1(b) calls for real estate with improvements and encumbrances, cash on hand and other personal estate; subsection (a) also includes known causes of action.
