MISSOURI-SPECIFIC NOTES
- Appellate Courts: Court of Appeals (Eastern, Western, Southern Districts) handles most criminal appeals. Supreme Court has exclusive jurisdiction over death penalty and life without parole cases. Mo. Const. art. V, § 3.
- Time to Appeal: Notice of appeal within 10 days after judgment becomes final (or denial of post-trial motion). Mo. Sup. Ct. R. 30.01(d).
- Points Relied On: Strictly enforced; failure to comply may result in dismissal. Rule 84.04(d).
- Plain Error Review: Unpreserved claims reviewed only for plain error under Rule 30.20 — error must be evident, obvious, and clear, affecting substantial rights and resulting in manifest injustice or a miscarriage of justice. State v. Brandolese, 601 S.W.3d 519 (Mo. 2020).
- Word Limit: 15,500 words for principal briefs; 7,500 for reply briefs. Rule 84.06.

About This Template
Criminal law paperwork covers every stage of a criminal case, from the first appearance and bail motion through pretrial motions, plea agreements, sentencing, and appeals. Deadlines in criminal cases are short and often unforgiving, and constitutional rights can be waived just by missing a filing. Using the right motion at the right time can mean the difference between evidence getting suppressed, charges getting reduced, or a case getting dismissed entirely.
