About Judge Barday
Shireen A. Barday has served as a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York since February 6, 2026. She earned a B.A. from Barnard College, an M.A. from the City University of New York, and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. Before joining the bench, she clerked for federal district and appellate judges and practiced litigation as a partner in New York.

Cautions
In In re 919 Prospect Ave LLC, Judge Barday rejected a contractor's claim that the debtor prevented performance because the contractor's own failure to act during the renewal window caused the permit to expire.
“It was Ap Tek’s failure to act within the renewal window, not any act or omission of the Debtor, that rendered the Permit expired and resulted in the need for a design professional.”
In In re Paul’s Welding Spring Works, Judge Barday denied a stay pending appeal after finding the debtor had not shown the elements required for a stay.
