CCA 200948058: An advance payment for goods may be allocated across the delivery period
Apply this to your situation
This page covers legal advice the IRS Office of Chief Counsel wrote for IRS staff, issued in 2009, which can't be cited as precedent. Ask about your situation and see what the current Code and IRS guidance say, with citations.
Plain-English summary
This Chief Counsel Advice considers an advance payment under a contract for delivery of inventoriable goods over several years. Counsel states that prorating the payment based on the actual volume delivered suggests that the payment is not allocable to any one year. On that reasoning, the advice concludes that the taxpayer had not received substantial advance payments.

My reaction is that this is a single contract for delivery of goods over a number of years. The fact that the advance payment is to be prorated based on actual volume delivered seems to indicate that the payment is not allocable to any one year. I would say that the taxpayer has not received substantial advance payments.
