PLR 200515014: Corporation may revoke alternative research credit election
Apply this to your situation
This page covers one taxpayer's ruling, issued in 2005, which can't be cited as precedent. Ask about your situation and see what the current Code and IRS guidance say, with citations.
Plain-English summary
A corporation had elected to calculate its research credit using the alternative incremental research credit rules in IRC § 41(c)(4). It asked to revoke that election before the return deadline for a later tax year. The IRS consented to revocation for qualified research expenses paid or incurred in that year. The corporation would use the general research credit rule under § 41(a) for that year and later years unless it made a new alternative election. The IRS did not decide whether the corporation's expenses qualified as research expenses.

- Outcome: Approved for the specified tax year and succeeding years, subject to any later new election.
