MAINE BILL OF SALE PRACTICE NOTES

Motor Vehicles: For vehicles model year 1995 or newer, a properly assigned title is required in addition to this Bill of Sale. Register within 30 days at a BMV branch or municipal agent.

Odometer Disclosure: Required for vehicles model year 2011 or newer, self-propelled, with GVWR of 16,000 lbs. or less. Complete both on title AND use Maine Form MVT-32 if title is unavailable.

Sales Tax: Maine imposes a 5.5% sales tax on vehicle purchases. Casual sales between private parties are generally subject to use tax.

Inspection: Maine-registered vehicles must pass annual safety inspection. Obtain inspection within 30 days of registration.

Watercraft: Boats with motors over 10 horsepower must be registered with Maine IF&W. USCG documentation may be required for vessels used in federal waters.

Notarization: While not strictly required for private sales, notarization is recommended for high-value transactions and to prevent disputes.

Keep Copies: Both parties should retain signed copies of this Bill of Sale for their records.
